Carini abandoned the bout after just 46 seconds. Almost immediately, social media exploded with accusations about Khelif’s eligibility to compete in women’s boxing. Khelif was born and raised female and competed in the women’s category. However, questions surrounding eligibility intensified after the International Boxing Association said she had previously failed its eligibility requirements. Are these ancient warnings relevant to what we are witnessing today? ### Echoes of Rome History provides uncomfortable comparisons. The Roman Empire did not collapse because of one event. Political corruption, economic instability, military pressure, social division, and declining confidence in institutions all contributed to its deterioration.
